English Name: JOJOBA Scientific Name: Simmondsia Family: Buxaceae

Jojoba plants are a promising oil crop due to their remarkable ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions. They are often referred to as the “desert’s olive tree” because of their ability to thrive in arid environments with extreme temperatures.

Key characteristics of jojoba plants include:

  • High tolerance for harsh conditions: Jojoba plants can withstand high temperatures reaching up to 55°C, low temperatures down to -10°C, and saline soils.

  • Long lifespan: Jojoba shrubs can live for over 200 years in desert soils, making them a sustainable and long-term investment.

  • Evergreen foliage: Jojoba plants retain their leaves throughout the year, even in dry and hot conditions, enabling them to continue photosynthesis and oil production.

  • Exceptional oil quality: Jojoba oil is a liquid wax, not a true oil, and is highly stable and resistant to rancidity. It has a wide range of applications in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial lubricants.

  • Long seed and oil shelf life: Jojoba seeds and their extracted oil can maintain their quality for over 25 years, making them a valuable and durable product.

Jojoba cultivation:

  • Planting: Jojoba seeds are typically planted in the spring or fall.

  • Production timeline: Jojoba plants begin producing oil after three years of planting, with oil production gradually increasing until reaching peak productivity around the eighth year.

  • Harvesting: Jojoba seeds are harvested when they turn golden brown and fall from the shrub.

Jojoba plants offer a sustainable and profitable option for cultivation in arid and challenging environments. Their resilience, longevity, and high-quality oil make them a valuable resource for various industries.

Benefits of Jojoba

Treatment for teeth and gums, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, nail treatment, acne treatment, dark circles treatment, cracked heels treatment, psoriasis treatment, sunburn and eczema treatment.

Hair: It is similar in its effectiveness on the hair to the fatty sebum that is naturally secreted by human hair. Therefore, it is included in the manufacture of many different cosmetic materials and cosmetics, such as hair creams, shampoos, and oils that help treat damaged and brittle hair.

Seed residues are used as fodder for livestock and fish. Because it contains a high percentage of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Jojoba oil is used in the manufacture of medicines and veterinary preparations.

It is used as a biofuel for aircraft engines, because it has higher combustion rates than other oils and is an alternative to petroleum and fossil fuels.  It is used in the manufacture of natural biocides, candles, paints, varnishes, plastic inks, rubber, and anti-fizzing materials.

The environmental benefits of jojoba bushes are: They resist the intensity of the wind and dunes crawling. And a new and renewable source of clean energy, as the cultivation of an acre of Jojoba annually releases the equivalent of 137.5 tons of oxygen and sequesters the equivalent of 22 tons of carbon dioxide.

The fact that jojoba oils are used as biofuel: its carbon emissions are very low when burned compared to fossil fuels, which makes it environmentally friendly.

The superior ability of the jojoba to be irrigated with sewage water or industrial drainage raises the environmental rating of the cultivated areas.

Jojoba doubles the productivity of agricultural lands, as it can be planted with palm trees in the same area, and its cultivation does not require a lot of fertilizers, pesticides, and agricultural treatments. Because it is rarely infected with diseases, which greatly reduces its production costs. It is considered a promising local investment opportunity as an alternative to importing, as Egypt imports more than 90% of its needs of vegetable oils, which makes investing in it very profitable to meet the needs of the local market. It is also considered a regional and global investment opportunity due to the increasing rates of global demand, and the opportunity increases when we know that Europe is unable to cultivate it due to the nature of the climate in European countries. Jojoba oil is considered to have a high economic yield, as the seed contains 40-50% of its weight as pure oil, and the yield from jojoba cultivation is 22-25% from the third year of cultivation, and starting from the fourth year, the percentage increases until it reaches 100% in the sixth and seventh year.
